All Things Creative

I’m a workaholic. 7 days a week. Any time of day or night. I live and breathe all things creative. In fact, my day is not complete if I haven’t worked on at least one of my creative mediums, and chances are, I’m working on three simultaneously. Why? I legitimately love life. Every single moment we have here is an opportunity for growth, a potential moment of inspiration. Even the shitty times. Where all appears lost. Those tend to be the moments we transform the most. And conflict, whether internal or external, is often the basis of a good story, and an incredible space to create from.

I guess you could say I’m kind of obsessed when it comes to creativity. My hands are always reaching for the keyboard or a pen, my voice is always finding a melody, my mind is always fleshing out an idea or a character, and even when I’m dreaming, I’m building worlds and learning something about my subconscious and the human condition. I create because I have to. I Must. An old acting coach once recommended this beautiful book by Rainer Maria Rilke called, Letters to a Young Poet, and in it, there’s an excerpt that I think really reflects my thoughts not only on writing, but on creating, or really, any passion.

“There is only one thing you should do. Go into yourself. Find out the reason that commands you to write; see whether it has spread its roots into the very depths of your heart; confess to yourself whether you would have to die if you were forbidden to write. This most of all: ask yourself in the most silent hour of your night: must I write? Dig into yourself for a deep answer. And if this answer rings out in assent, if you meet this solemn question with a strong, simple "I must", then build your life in accordance with this necessity; your whole life, even into its humblest and most indifferent hour, must become a sign and witness to this impulse. Then come close to Nature. Then, as if no one had ever tried before, try to say what you see and feel and love and lose.” Rilke

I don’t take creativity lightly. It’s my life’s purpose to create and share, love and experience, and tell stories that can shape the way we view ourselves and our place on this planet. It’s my goal to inspire us to listen to that inner voice that intuitively knows what we need if we’re brave enough to listen. And if I can do that with a little mystery and a little magic, my job here is done :)
